SPAIN & PORTUGAL
The influence of Islam remains evident in the Alhambra. Despite 600 years of efforts to purge it, Islamic influence continues to permeate Iberia through cuisine, architecture, and language. The rich history and legacy of Islamic civilization are still visible in intricate building designs, traditional dishes, and linguistic traces throughout the region.

MADRID
Grand plazas, royal palaces, and museums now define Madrid, but the city’s origins trace back to a small Muslim fortress built in the 9th century. That chapter is almost invisible today—its traces buried beneath centuries of Christian rule. The Almudena Cathedral stands where a mosque once stood, and the old walls that once bore the call to prayer now blend into the urban fabric. What remains of Madrid’s Islamic past is not in the monuments, but in the quiet acknowledgment that a piece of its story was deliberately erased.
BARCELONA
Visitors come to Barcelona for Gaudí’s colorful architecture, bustling markets, and Mediterranean charm. Few notice that the city, long before becoming a Catalan stronghold, was once part of Al-Andalus. Muslim rule here was brief, and its presence now survives only in scattered records and the shape of certain streets. The absence itself is striking—proof that history can be so completely overwritten that most will never know it was there at all.
CORDOBA
Walk beneath the red-and-white arches of the Great Mosque and the past feels close—rows of columns, the glow of the mihrab, the geometry of devotion. But the Qur’an is no longer recited here, and the arches now stand within a cathedral. Córdoba was once the crown of Al-Andalus, a center of learning that drew scholars from across the Muslim world. Today, its beauty is preserved, but only as art, not as faith. In its silence, the old Nasrid motto still lingers: la ghalib illa Allah—there is no victor except Allah—though the city’s victors long claimed otherwise.
SEVILLE
The Giralda Tower rises above Seville’s skyline, admired as a marvel of Renaissance Spain, yet its base and form belong to a minaret built for the Great Mosque. For centuries, Ishbiliya thrived under Muslim rule, its gardens, markets, and scholars enriching all of Al-Andalus. Then came the fall in 1248, and with it, the conversion of mosques into churches, the repurposing of palaces, and the exile of its Muslim inhabitants. The Alcázar still carries the artistry of its original builders, but its context has shifted, and the heart that shaped it no longer beats here.
LISBON
The Alfama district’s steep, winding lanes carry the layout of a medieval Muslim city, though most visitors will never hear the name al-Ushbuna. For more than 400 years, this was a thriving port under Muslim rule, its harbor alive with trade and travel. The Christian conquest in 1147 ended that era, and much of the city’s Islamic presence was deliberately stripped away. Now tiled facades and monuments to the Age of Discovery dominate the skyline, masking the deeper history that still rests in its foundations
SINTRA
The colorful Palace de Pena and manicured gardens of Sintra seem untouched by loss, yet above them stands the Castelo dos Mouros—a reminder that this land was once a fortified outpost of Al-Andalus. When the Muslims were expelled in the 12th century, the castle was left to weather and ruin, while Christian rulers built their retreats below. The beauty of Sintra’s hillsides is undeniable, but for those who know its past, the view from the Moorish walls feels more like looking over something once guarded, now gone forever.
